Funerals

Oulton and Woodlesford still have a village-feel about them and for this reason most funerals take place in the Parish Church of St. John rather than going to one of the crematoria or cemeteries elsewhere in Leeds or Wakefield. As with Weddings and Christenings, a person living in this parish has a right to their funeral being taken in the local church (or conducted by a local minister) and this right also extends to being buried in the churchyard.
When a death is reported to a local Funeral Directing firm they will contact the Priest and arrange a date and time for the service. These firms will also arrange matters such as a notice of death in the local newspaper. The actual funeral service is arranged between the priest and family/relatives. Usually the priest will visit the next of kin at their home and things like readings (from the Bible and a poem perhaps), hymns and other music are worked out. The family may choose for a collection to be taken at the service to benefit a local charity (or sometimes the church benefits from this).
The death of a loved one affects us in all sorts of ways but we hope that the funeral service provided by this parish gives a good and appropriate send off to your loved one and that it provides faith and hope to face the future.
And finally… The Lord Jesus himself said: "Blessed are those who mourn: for they will be comforted." May God bless you.
